Borgo Natio

Lembo sul quale mossi i primi passi
e versai le mie lacrime innocenti,
almeno, quei momenti ritrovassi,
di gioie passeggere, di tormenti
  senza ragione: fole di fanciullo,
che spera, che dispera e guarda avanti,
lembo di Paradiso, in te m'annullo;
in te mi perdo e mi ritrovo e quanti
Quante braccia robuste, e quanti prodi
tu selvaggia m'appari
ma sincera
mia dolce terra
paradiso eterno di pace
di ricordi tanto cari
che tremo nel cercar le parole
piccole e inadeguate
come fari a rischiarar cio
che gia ride al sole
il tuo sole
che la tra quei cipressi
scalda memorie e lagrime cocenti
abbracci senza fine
eterni amplessi
ancor ci doni i suoi tramonti ardenti

 English translation:

My Birthplace

Oh land upon which I took my first steps
and spilled my  innocent tears,
if only I could in back to those times again,
of  fleeting joys, of groundless torments:
those of a young boy  who hopes, despairs and looks to the future,
oh  small piece of Paradise I lose myself in you.
in  you I disappear and find myself once more and how many
like me  have loved you and then gone,
leaving a trace of their works with you,
and taking with them the green of your meadows
and the fragrance of the fallow fields and musty marc.
How many have sung your praises to me,
with their plain  speech and melodious accent!
How many strong arms, and  how many valiant
sons of yours have left a treasured  memory
which I hold deep in my heart,
loving all that lives in you,  the people,
and the bountiful hillsides upon which I gazed!
And  I am not aggrieved by the time that has gone by
The dark idea of that time that remains to  me
Rather it gladdens my disenchanted heart
to feel bewitched once more by those places with festive decoration
Or to see the awakening of spring
Or the glassy candour of winter
You appear wild to me
And yet sincere
My sweet land
Eternal Paradise of peace
And of memories so dear
That I tremble in searching those small and inadequate words
Like spotlights to risk what already laughs
In the sun
Your sun
That over there among those cypress trees
Warms memories and tears together
Endlessly embraces
Eternal joy
And still bestows on us its
Fiery sunsets.
