(I am only singing, but do it with all of my heart) - flogen ihm die Herzen der Zuschauer zu - und meines auch!

Im nächsten Jahr endlich Aria - The Opera Album, absolut wunderbar!

Beide Konzerte waren absolut super!

My personal Andrea Bocelli story
by Anne-Karin Dersch

This story is going on now over many, many years, like a never-ending story...
My first encounter with Andrea`s voice was not very spectacular...I did not discover him myself... it was a friend who told me about him after the Pavarotti&Friends concert in 1995. I listened to him and said: "Well, this is a wonderful, very beautiful voice..." - but nothing more happened.
Some months later, in May 1996, the same friend showed me the disc "bocelli", and after listening I liked it so much, that I bought the disc one day later. From the beginning my favourite songs have been "Con te partiro" and "Vivo per lei"...I heard them very often. (By the way, this friend who discovered him, she did not become a Bocelli fan...but I did...a little bit later!)

In November of the same year the appearance of Andrea and Sarah Brightman with "Time to Say Goodbye" took place, at the final boxing match of Henry Maske in Germany, the successful start of the story of a song, which was going arround the world, ...and the beginning of the unprecedented career of Andrea. I did not see the match and also not Andrea`s appearance, but they played the song on radio continually, it has been no.1 in the charts as long as no other song before in Germany, and I liked it very much - but nothing more.

In January 1997 I saw a TV interview with Andrea - and this was the moment where I began to get interest for "the man behind the voice"...I bought all discs I could have that time, Romanza, Il Mare Calmo della Sera and Viaggio Italiano. Andrea`s interpretation of the classical arias like "Il Lamento di Federico" from L`Arlesiana or "Ah, la paterno mano" from Macbeth, and especially Schubert`s Ave Maria, touched me so very much, the first times listening to the Ave Maria I always had to cry...so a new fan was born!

One month later Andrea and Sarah Brightman won the Echo award as most selling artists in Germany. The show has been broadcasted live, and it took place in my hometown Hamburg.
I was sitting at home and was waiting for Andrea`s appearance, much excited, and like in much other shows the following years, I had to wait until the end before he came on stage....but what a moment...he was phantastic...so likable, so modest, so handsome...and as he said - in a bit insecure English - " I am only singing, but I do it with all of my heart.." - he got the sympathy of the audience - and mine too!

Then, finally, the first time Andrea live in concert. He was doing an open-air tour through Germany, 14 concerts from June to August, and he also came to Hamburg, his second concert on the tour. It was rainy, windy and cold, and the acoustics have been very bad in the stadium. But that was not important. To hear this incredible voice singing Tosca, La Bohème, Rigoletto was so impressive. "Pourquoi me réveiller" from Werther was blown away from the wind, but nevertheless it was my favourite. I like operatic music since my childhood, and my absolute favourite tenor that time was Placido Domingo. But the wonderful voice of Andrea, his special timbre, his interpretation, the expression, the warmth of his voice was going into heart and soul, although 12 years ago the power of his voice was not as strong as today...
After the concert I went home like in a dream...and I decided to visit some other concerts of the tour - 4 weeks later in Dresden and the last one in Berlin, which was the best one of these three, Andrea was very relaxed, it had sunny and warm weather, a perfect Italian night!

In October Andrea won another award, the Echo classic - but than it was silent for a long time...no press reviews, no internet at that time...I went every month to the music stores and asked if there was a new disc...but...nothing!

In the next year finally the release of Aria - The opera Album, absolutely wonderful!
And than I accidental read in a newspaper, that Andrea should perform at the music festival in Bremen (about 100 km away from Hamburg), and I immediately decided to visit the concert. It was perfect, because it took place one day after I returned from my vacation in Viareggio! The name of the concert was "Voices from Heaven", with sacred arias in the program, and I was so much delighted - Andrea`s voice really seemed to come from heaven!

The following years I travelled very much to visit several performances:
1999 - a weekend trip to Verona to see La Vedova Allegra - little disappointment, because Andrea did not sing the main part as announced, but "only" three arias as guest.

The next experience was in 2001, Verdi`s La Messa di Requiem in the opera house of Munich, and I was flying with a strong influenza and against the advice if my doctor - the result was, that after the landing in Munich my ears have been shut - and I thought, okay you will see Andrea but you will not be able to hear him very good.... fortunately some hours later it went better and during the concert I felt pretty good. It was the first unamplified concert - great to hear his natural voice, so sweet, so young...the Ingemisco was phantastic!

2002 there were following two concerts of the Sentimento tour, in Aarhus/Denmark and in Rotterdam, and at the beginning of 2003 there was an announcement of a concert in Siena in May, and I made my vacation arround it in Tuscany. It took place on the Piazza del Campo, great atmosphere and a wonderful Andrea, unforgettable.

Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago one year later, finally the first time I saw Andrea on opera stage, as Cavaradossi in Tosca - and the first time I was talking with him... no, not really talking - he arrived at the open-air theatre before the opening night, and he was veeery concentrated and, I guess also very nervous, so I didn`t want to disturb him and I only said to him "Buona fortuna Andrea" - and he answered with half voice, but with his big smile "Grazie"...
The performance was unforgettable, Andrea was singing and acting with great emotions and absolute wonderful, very realistic and dramatic. I remember very well his cries in the torture scene in the second act, they were thrilling me to the marrow (...and I feel the same when I am listening this part of the disc...)
I think Puccini`s music is made for Andrea`s voice - or better, Andrea`s voice is perfect for singing Puccini.

2005 a concert in Oslo, and a gala concert at Deutsche Oper Berlin, with arias and duets from Verdi and Puccini.
I already had a ticket for a concert, which was announced for December in Cologne - but unfortunately it was cancelled some weeks before...bad luck and disappointment for many German fans.

The next highlight for me was in March 2006, Puccini`s La Messa di Gloria at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence - again Puccini, wonderful music, but unfortunately this mass has an only very small tenor part...but - as encore Andrea sang the Pearlfisher-duet - wow!
My hotel was very close to the theatre, so I could see him coming to the rehearsals and after the concerts, too. I saw two of the three performances, and I could not get enough...so I visited the same mass again last year in Padova, sure with Andrea. This time it took place in a church, which was a very special experience, very good acoustics and Andrea`s voice filled apparently easy the large church.

Then 2007 - a concert at the Philharmonie in Munich in January - and in July at the Teatro del Silenzio in Andrea`s beautiful native town Lajatico, the great concert, which was recorded on DVD: Vivere - live in Tuscany, the first and probably only concert, where Andrea sang exclusive his most successful pop songs -  I am sure you all have seen the DVD. I am very thankful that I could experience this, because - the concerts in Lajatico have a very special atmosphere. The Teatro, in the midst of the lovely Tuscan landscape, surrounded from the soft valleys and hills, it really is a magical place...
This year I visited Lajatico a second time, and I have had the same feeling. The very special moments for me this time have been the entrance from Andrea on horseback, and the appearance from him and Placido Domingo - my" first" and my "second" favourite tenor together in duet - a dream coming true..and an absolute goose-skin feeling...
Besides I have noticed that Andrea is more relaxed on stage in this atmosphere - both concerts have been absolute marvelous experiences for me!

To complete the list of my experiences with Andrea-live I have to speak about the other performances of the last two years. Andrea has been a phantastic Don Jose in Carmen last year at the opera house of Rome. I have seen the opening night and the last performance - both unforgettable and, together with two or three other performances, the best Andrea I ever have seen!
And after the performances, at the stage entrance I have had the possibility to congratulate him and to shake his hand.

This year Palermo - great disappointment because of the cancellation of the two Faust performances - which was compensated by the meet-and-greet with Andrea in his hotel, and the mini-concert he has given for the fans, which have been there.
And Berlin, Mascagni-Gala at Deutsche Oper with a wonderful Cavalleria rusticana...and a very patient Andrea, who has written autographs more than one hour in the lobby of the opera house!
At last Warsaw in August, a concert of the Incanto tour, in the second part with the songs from my, at the moment, favourite album.

Well, I could speak long and longer about this, about the excitement before the releases of Andrea`s discs, about the - I don`t know how much - hours of video recordings of concerts, TV-appearances and TV-interviews I have done, about my collection of press reviews and photos, and.. and.. and....
I only can say, Andrea has changed my life, he maybe made me a little bit crazy (like my friends say). He never has disappointed me. It was so exciting to follow his incomparable career and the developement of his voice all over the years. Sure there sometimes was an interpretation that I didn`t like, or a song which was not my favourite, or a tone which was not perfect, a concert which was not so good as others - but I think this is normal. At no time I regret to travel arround Europe to visit his performances (never before I have done this for a singer...), I remember them all very much and I won`t miss one of them.
Andrea´s voice, but also his personality, and how he is going his way, touch me very much. Especially this incredible voice, which is coming from heart and going into heart!
